Yes, self deprecating humour is the safest as it is unlikely that you will insult anyone. A friend of mine's girlfriend told him off for laughing at himself saying it was putting himself down. Bad when people can not laugh at themselves.

Most definitely! None of us are perfect, and if you can't laugh at yourself, then when someone makes a joke at your expense??? It's much better to laugh with them and sometime return the 'favour'.
