Skirts with splits
I recently bought a nice long black skirt but it has splits on each side of the skirt. I’ve had it on in public a few times with no problems but I’m starting to feel a bit self conscious about the splits. Do any fellow skirt wearers on here have skirts with splits and which way do you wear them? Do you wear the skirt with the splits on each side or do you wear with the splits front and behind?

Re: Skirts with splits
Usually no splits.
When I have had a split, it's been on straight, knee-length skirts at the back, in line with the zip and about six inches long. The split makes walking and sitting easier.

Re: Skirts with splits
Unless it is a pencil skirt with a slit at the back, I won't buy it. I hate side slits. I have bought a couple of dresses with side slits and did not realise even after trying them on. I got a dressmaker to close them - that's how much I hate side slits.

Re: Skirts with splits
Not a fan of them, but I have a few (two that I remember):
1) knee-length, a-line Moschino skirt. I hand sewed an invisible zipper so I could adjust the length of the split - for walking all day I usually leave it 3/4 unzipped, but working where I'll be sitting most of the day I leave it 1/4 unzipped (otherwise stride length is impacted).
2) midi/maxi linen skirt. The slit goes up just above the knee. I've worn this a few times but it feels weird as I'm not really trying to highlight my legs (or in this case, one leg). However, as I'm not a fan of voluminous long skirts, it helps cut down on the amount of fabric.

Re: Skirts with splits
The top of the splits on skirts is usually lower than the hem of my mini skirts, so I have no problems with splits. Visually I wouldn't wear a skirt with a front split as it might seem suggestive on a man. I do have a few mini skirts with zippered side splits which can be adjusted to suit the situation (as described by Coder). Also I have a couple of mini skirts with about a dozen zippered splits all around which is more for aesthetic than practical reasons.
Splits on tight skirts can make it possible to walk with a natural stride, otherwise they would live up to the name hobble skirts.

I do not have any skirts with splits, although I have made my daughter a skirt with a split up the left leg. I personally have a problem with asymmetric things on me. I like symmetry in my clothes. Skirts with splits in the centre at the back to aid walking, I am not sure about. I may have to experiment.

Also not a fan of splits Mouse. I dont have a adequate reason. I suppose I'm just a fan of a bit of flare.Mouse wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 12:34 pm I do not have any skirts with splits, although I have made my daughter a skirt with a split up the left leg. Re: Skirts with splits
I think I’ll be careful from now on when choosing skirts and make sure they don’t have splits in them. Anyway the skirt was only £5 reduced from £10 so at least it was cheap.

I think each skirt has its own special features, that for me is one of the joys of skirt wearing. Any pair of trousers, just encase your legs and follow whatever your legs do. A skirt, however follows all manner of external forces and you as the wearer have to deal with it, which is the fun part of wearing a particular skirt.DrFishnets wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 2:57 pm I think I’ll be careful from now on when choosing skirts and make sure they don’t have splits in them. Re: Skirts with splits
While I'm not opposed to wear a skirt with slit(s), I'm not appealed by it either. But there is some fun with it: kilts and wrap skirts can be seen as skirts with a giant slit somewhere. Which I already worn many times.

I seem to be the only one who likes splits, I like more fitted skirts so splits help when moving around. I also like the look of them. I have quite a number with a split. Each to their own...

Personally I don't have any with slits, but I wanted to add that if you have a skirt with slits that you don't like, it's not that difficult to sew godets into them (assuming not a kilt or other kind of wrap skirt).

Re: Skirts with splits
Don’t get me wrong but I do like the look of splits in skirts it’s just that I feel a bit self conscious with a lot of my leg showing through the split when I’m wearing fishnet tights or sheer black tights/pantyhose when walking even though I’ve been told I have nice legs. I don’t mind the splits when I’m wearing thick black tights or leggings.victor1964 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 19, 2024 6:50 pm![]()

Re: Skirts with splits
I have one with a slit and the work scrub dress has one on either side(but I have the regulation trousers on under anyway so).
I'm not a fan of slits, on my skirt it rubbs against my leg and I don't like the feeling of it, the work one I don't care so much, the trousers provide plenty of sensory hell. The dress does remove a bunch of the sensory issues with the regular blouse/shirt so its still a win.
Sure they can look good on someone with nice legs, but my hairy ones don't like the feeling. I prefer flare to allow motion.
