Bands and albums

Post by DrFishnets »

What are fellow skirt wearers favourite bands and albums?

Here is a list of my favourite bands and albums of all time. As I’ve mentioned a while ago I am a musician and play guitars and keyboards/synthesizer and compose my own music using my MacBook Pro and Logic Pro. It’s a very satisfying hobby alongside fashion design, art, drawing and cycling. The bands I include have been a great influence in my music making.

Scritti Politti - Cupid and Psyche 85. A brilliantly produced album and Green Gartside’s vocals are sublime.
New Musik - From A to B. One of my favourites from the 1980s. Includes singles Living by Numbers and This World of Water.
Kajagoogoo - Islands. Great album and as a bonus Nick Beggs is a fellow skirt wearer.
Level 42 ~ The Pursuits of Accidents
Nik Kershaw - Human Racing
Howard Jones - Human’s Lib
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Tangerine Dream - White Eagle
Vangelis - Bladerunner OST

There are more to list.

Anyway what are your favourite bands and albums?

I'm not going to spend time making a definitive list, and I'm just going to date myself here, but off the top of my head...

Rush: Grace under Pressure
Jean-Michel Jarre: Oxygene
Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells
Fleetwood Mac: Rumours
E.L.O.: Out of the Blue
Genesis: And then there were three

plus other artists that I couldn't pin down to an album (other than 'Greatest Hits'), such as
Queen, Steeleye Span, Alan Parsons Project, Supertramp, The Seekers, Jethro Tull, Abba,...

And individuals such as Kate Bush, David Bowie, Elton John, Sting,...

I’m surprised I missed out Jean Michel Jarre because I’m a fan of his music and it was listening to Jarre that got me obsessed with synthesizers. Oxygene is good but Equinoxe is another great album. I also like Mike Oldfield and Genesis.

Interesting .... .... 95 - 98% of the music and artists named above, I've never heard of.

Am I that old fashioned :?:

IMHO, if music has more than 3 chords and does not repeat the same words multiple times,
then I'm kind of interested.

A song needs Basic Structure.
1) Intro
2) Verse
3) Chorus
4) Ending

The verse and chorus are usually repeated throughout a song, while the intro, bridge,
and coda (also called an "outro") are usually only used once.

I love the music written by Bernstein, Learner & Lowe, Geo & Ira Gershwin, George M. Cohen,
Cole Porter, John Williams, just to name a few composers. They wrote music that actually means
something to the listener, not just the beat of a drum with a guitar accompanying it.

Also, most of the Big Band Era of music is great to listen(and tap your toes) too :)

:hmmm: I guess I'ld better go back under my rock and :hide:

Well those bands were at their peak in Radio play in the Late 70's into the late 80's.

Most of the bands I listed above are from the 1980s which was my favourite decade for music as a lot of the music at that time were done on keyboards synthesizers and samplers. Most of that music I listed has an intro, verse, chorus and ending. Most pop songs from the 1980s had a middle eight.

On the topic of MIS you should check out Kajagoogoo. It may not be your style of music but the bass player/vocalist Nick Beggs frequently wears skirts and kilts.

How about a piece of music on the original, wind powered, orchestral synthesizer :?:

This clip is 11 years old but still holds its value :D

What an amazing instrument and I love the sound it makes. It’s very atmospheric. John Williams music is very special.

I also have a love for film and television soundtracks as I listed Vangelis’ Bladerunner in my list and there are dozens more scores.

I produce recreations of film and television scores myself but it’s done on synthesizers.

I'm a rocker, no getting around that. While I've never managed to start playing an instrument even if I did give both the drums and electric guitar a good shot, I just don't have that musical talent.

I do listen to a lot of music though
Iron Maiden has always been one of my favourites, its one of the bands that really got me to start listening to music, the other being Led Zeppelin. Of more contemporary artists I really love Greta van Fleet. But if its hard rock or power metal, new or old, odds are I like it, and most adjacent genres will pop up in my playlists a lot too.

My first love is classical music, but my non-classical taste was nurtured at school in the late 1970s, so a lot of my key albums are from 1976-1979. I'm OK with Led Zep (as long as their lead isn't singing flat, a problem which can also affect Pink Floyd). I was also happy to hear a good deal of Deep Purple's 'Made in Japan' (bonus points to any band with a keyboard player) and some Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Recently I've been sampling an album from Nightwish. But I prefer the slightly prog end of rock, which makes Rush ideal. I'll always prefer a band that can play in 7/8 over one that sticks to 4 in a bar!

Yes, Jarre's Equinoxe is the equal of Oxygene, and I also rate Oldfield's Ommadawn alongside Tubular Bells.

An album with special status for me is Enya 'Memory of Trees', as they had it playing on a loop in the hotel restaurant on the most idyllic evening of our honeymoon.

It was myself who mentioned Equinoxe not Seb and I’m glad that you agree with me that Equinoxe is equal to Oxygene as they are two great electronic music albums that were ahead of its time. As for Mike Oldfield my personal favourite was Crises. The track Moonlight Shadow and the title track are sublime as well as In High Place with Jon Anderson.

I cannot say that I am keen or Hard rock or metal music though I do like progressive rock like Genesis, King Crimson and an obscure German rock band called Eloy who were brilliant.

I wasn’t to know that! Anyway back on topic….

It looks like I’m the only fellow skirt wearer on this forum who appreciates 1980s synth music and soundtrack music (apart from Uncle AL) so far…
