Skorts
Skorts
I wasn't sure where to put this so I decided to try here and if not appropriate please move to where it would be more so. How many of you remember skorts. Those things that from the back that looked like a pair of shorts until you saw the front and it looked like a skirt hence the name skort. I was at a ballgame last night and coming down the steps was a lady wearing a skort. It was black with colorful flowers all over. Also I was in Sears the other day and say a rack of skorts on special since it is the end of the summer season and fall stuff will soon be coming out. I had a couple myself a few years back one khaki and one denim that I would wear around the house when I was alone. So my question or thought are skorts starting to make a come back into the fashion world. I always thought if I had a nerve back in the day a skort is something I would love to have gone public in.

Re: Skorts
I remember them, albeit not particularly fondly. To me, they're one of those garments that get worn when one cannot make up their mind what they want to wear. In sort of a "neither fish nor foul" sort of way they transmit the same message as wearing trousers under a skirt. Why? Pick one or the other and get on with it, don't muddy the waters any more than they already are.Rev Paul wrote:How many of you remember skorts. Even as a "transitional garment" they fall woefully short in that they send that confused message, and from the front, by looking like a skirt will draw the ridicule of those who would ridicule, and chuckles from the back (assuming that anybody bothered to track for that long) once they realise what's going on. The only benefit to them I can see is the large area offered by the apron-front which can be used to show off a print to effect where a simple pair of short trousers would not.
For my money, it seems that one would get the disadvantages of both and the advantages of neither (which is usually what one gets in a hybrid approach).

Re: Skorts
As part of a private fashion parade I shot off this selfie wearing a short black skort, always difficult to photograph.
It's not the sort of thing I would venture out in and almost knee-length culottes would suit better, which I don't have.

Re: Skorts
I once purchased a 'skirt' off of ebay. When I got it I found that it was instead a skort. Aarg! I returned it for a full refund.

I have three or four of the lycra sort, athletic/tennis. I don't wear them often, since they are inconvenient for using the bathroom.

Re: Skorts
My one and only skort actually has a skirt all the way around. I think it is still around here somewhere, but I haven't worn it in years. I think it was the first "skirted" garment I wore out in public. The skort is quite short and I wore it with a long tunic type top to the clothing optional beach that I can walk to. It has a pair of tight fitting shorts under and was hard to put back on with sandy feet.

Re: Skorts
I would rather wear a short skirt in public that a skort - I can justify skirt wearing; cool, comfortable, etc.
I thought skorts were designed for girls to wear in playgrounds so not to expose their underwear - and still comply to traditional gender expectations (otherwise they could just wear shorts).

Re: Skorts
I have bought a few at the thrift stores, some knowingly, some not. The accidental purchases have all been converted by cutting out the shorts, and turning them into a skirt. I have never bought the kind described in the original post, and like most here, see no point to them. I can see the point of the ones where a complete skirt has a shorts, "liner" but most have a short that is too full, and often too heavy. Ideally, the "short" should be a brief, somewhat like the kind I would wear under anyway. A bicycle type short would also be acceptable. Because I have ended up with a few, they become somewhat more likely to be used. Before, I found them somewhat less useful, because I use them as is, i.e the built in short is the underwear, so, I would only feel comfortable wearing them one day. I realise now that this is hangover from when I didn't have a lot of pairs of pants, and thus didn't want to wash them too often. Still don't have many pants, but have gathered quite a collection of skirts!
Re: Skorts
I tried skorts a few times, and while I thought they looked good on me, they just didn't appeal to me the way a skirt does.

Re: Skorts
I have little interest in skorts now, but if I was inclined toward them, I'd look at these by Betabrand, which was a crowd-sourced start-up company. They have the combination of length and utility that would make them somewhat more practical, though I still generally prefer skirts. I like the idea of hidden pockets in the short, but would probably prefer it as two pieces; an outer skirt, and compression shorts underwear with the pocketing.

The company also has some interesting skirts, though i suppose any wrap skirt could be adapted as a cape as well. It would need to be longer for men, IMO. I am no caped-crusader, but I could see a wrap-around rain skirt thus adapted as practical:

Re: Skorts
I do not mind skorts, in fact bought 2 this year from Athleta in the US. These ones are more a skirt with light mesh undershort and nylon with spandex skirt. I wore one in Vancouver this summer had no comments. Very comfortable and easy to wear.

Re: Skorts
I does look like quite a practical skirt, albeit with extra decorum attached, Really a sports skirt, hence a similar play on language between sport and skirt - but quite a different kettle of fish to the normal skirt/shorts-skort.Liino wrote:I do not mind skorts, in fact bought 2 this year from Athleta in the US. Re: Skorts
A lot of skorts look really good. My only issue is that I have become accustomed to being able to use urinals in public bathrooms by lifting the hem of my skirt and pulling down the waist of the lycra (men's Jockey) underwear beneath. Skorts inhibit that pleasing benefit of a skirt. I do like the security against inadvertent exposures of underwear, though, but it's not a big enough concern for me to buy more skorts. The few I have were purchased because they were discounted so much I just couldn't pass them by.

I like that -- unzip for amplitude, zip for elegance. Excellent idea, but not at that price + transatlantic shipping!

Re: Skorts
My take on SKORTS (S-K-I-RTS & S-H-O-RTS = SKORTS).
Not for everyone - but if you have a hankering for short skirted wear and want to avoid the miscue of unintended exposure* then
SKORTS are just what fits the bill.
*This albeit if you wear a short skirt with random abandon - you wouldn't do that would you ?
Most skorts have an internal panty or compression shorts keeping everything where it should be.
Other skorts may have a loose fitting boxer type shorts sewn to the waist band.
In most cases nothing is inordinately exposed unless the skorts have ease slits in the garment (normally side seams).
The average hem line is about 14 inches - shorter on high activity sports (tennis) and longer on a less serious side (golf).
While they can be worn for casual wear the theme for the skorts was athletic activity.
Initially they were designed for girls with open back (shorts) and a modesty apron panel in the front and were called scooters.
A rear apron did not hold up for youngsters sliding on their rear down slides etc.
When it came to tennis; short skirts were troublesome for the wearer; the public and the officiating officials that too much was too much.
Therefore put shorts on and a skirt over the top and one was good to go.
Thus the SKORT was born full time for wear by what else the female side of the equation.
Well if you can wear a skirt you certainly can wear a SKORT ! No pants involved in this decision *!
*But just incidentally the pants are short shorts - that dreaded concept here at the SkirtCafe !
I have posted this picture before of me wearing one of my favorite SKORT's a Nike pleated tennis skort.
SKORTS not for everyone discerning entertainment !

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !
