Skirtcraft - New Photos and Survey

Post by finrod »

My project, Skirtcraft, is developing a men's/unisex skirt that I've posted about here a couple times before. As a result of feedback from our last survey, I've revised the design so that the lower side pockets are a bit higher and have zipper closures.

If anyone has a couple of minutes to complete a new survey about the latest version, I'd greatly appreciate it. This time I've included shots of the waistband and belt loops also.

For the record, here are the photos from the survey:

I'm tentatively calling this product the Freethinker Skirt. Thanks again!

Looks a much better design than your prototype, pockets much higher and not against the hem. Pockets at the back may be nice. Still not sure about the diagonal seam in front. :D

I quite liked the first version, but I like this better. A real improvement.

I have to confess to not being a fan of zippered pockets as they affect the way the skirt hangs due to their stiffness and also reduce the effective width of the pocket opening. My preference would be buttons, snaps or velcro (touch and close) but that may just be me.

Have fun,

Ian.

I like the new design with the higher pockets, but I am still not shure about the heavy fabric. The skirt looks very nice, modern and differ from others.

The diagonal front and back seam still look a bit odd to me. I would be much more interested in buying one if these seams where simply straight down.

Hi,

Better, but not a fan of the diagonal seem either. Maybe a second product is in order to cater for us disagreeable guys!!!

Hi,

I have just completed the survey - I don't have a lot to say against it and would prefer to see further colours as noted on the survey rather than just the rather bland one shown in the photos.

I liked this version better. Side pockets still a tad low for my taste, but usable. Not sure if the diagonal seam in front has been made slightly less diagonal, or perhaps it's just growing on me. Last time it was one of my objections, but this time I'm not finding it objectionable, and perhaps even desirable as a unique feature.

I like the diagonal zip and seam. I mean, why not have them a bit different?

Overall I like the look of this skirt. Though does it restrict one's stride at all? And a few more colours would be good.

I also like this version better. It looks like the hemline is a bit higher than before, closer to knee level now. Am I mistaken?

Thanks, melsav. I spent a good deal of time trying to work out back pockets that would be comfortable, useful, and fit the style, but I ended up with the lower side pockets as the second set instead. I like back pockets in trousers because front pockets can get cramped. And back pockets are especially nice when one is walking, but a major drawback is that it's often uncomfortable to sit on the contents. At the same time, with an A-line skirt, front and side pockets don't have some of the drawbacks of feeling cramped or jutting out as they can with trousers, because there's all this extra hidden space between the garment and one's body for the pockets to take occupy.

Another goal for the lower side pockets: that they be fairly easy to reach, but that their contents don't bang against one's legs while walking (as a several people warned about in feedback). I tried placing them in different locations, and this spot halfway down, directly centered on the side seams, was the clear winner. It doesn't get in the way of the legs, and at the same time it helps break up the weight of the side seam lines.

Ian, thank you. This skirt's made of a somewhat stiff fabric, so the zipper doesn't seem to distort the way it hangs too much; in fact, it seems like it might be counteracting creasing on the strong side seams a little (the other fix there was to give the pocket patch some horizontal "give" relative to the underlying panels so that when curved around the leg it wouldn't be stretched over the seams). But the fabric we'll choose for the actual product will likely be a bit softer, so will have to check that it can bear having zippers here. Lighter-weight zippers would be an option too.

I went with zippers over buttons or snaps due to better security, but I think velcro could be great here too. What do you think would work better: velcro just inside the opening of the pocket, or a flap that velcro'd down to the outside? I think the former might look a bit better and be easier to open (just stab your hand through it!). But I have noticed that velcro can wear out and lose effectiveness, too.

MrNaturalAZ and dillon - no, neither the angle of the front seam nor the length has changed. :-) It must just be due to photo angles or the skirt perhaps being worn slightly higher or lower in these pictures compared to the last round.

It doesn't restrict my walking stride at all, but it does limit me if I try to take a leap or go up stairs two at a time.
