Introduction

Post by DTSA »

Hi, I have been reading this site for a while now and thought I would introduce myself. I have lived out of the UK for a couple of years and thought nothing of wearing one of my Macabi's. When back in the UK I am reluctent to do so but today I wore a Macabi while visiting a vinyard in Sussex and nobody said a word. This has given me a much needed confidence boost and I plan to wear them more often.
Has anybody here worn a Macabi in the UK and had any reactions at all?

Yes - I've occasionally worn a macabi skirt out and about hill-walking in the Peak District and on the Long Mynd in Shropshire. No reactions from anyone at all.

Edited to say - Welcome to the Caff!

Welcome to the forum. No, I have never worn a Macabi, but I've worn the box pleat camo skirt from Midas Clothing out and about a few times, including visiting Edinburgh Zoo and never had any hassle and I've worn my Freedom Cargo Kilt around London without any problems.

I don't own a Macabi either, I usually wear plain, knee-length denim or corduroy skirts. I've worn them out walking with my dog, to my dentists, on trains and walking through cities, even in the Meadowhall Centre, and I get no reaction 99% of the time.

When I do get a reaction, it's usually somebody doing a "double-take" - you can see the wheels going around in their heads..."is that a..man..and is he really wearing a ...??" Then they just get on with their own lives. I once wore a skirt at my local Asda and been approached by someone who knew me and who poked fun at...my hat! He obviously hadn't lowered his gaze sufficiently to notice the straight, navy panelled denim number I bought from Marks and Spencer about 3 or 4 years ago and is still going strong.

Men do have a problem wearing skirts - and that problem is in their own heads! In my experience, so long as you wear the right skirt with the right outfit and you remain supremely confidfent, very few people notice, and those who do really couldn't give a toss.

I was expecting more of a reaction to wearing a Macabi out and about. As you say Stu, it's in your head and you expect a reaction of some sorts. I have read the threads of wearing a denim skirt because nobody seems to notice so I will have to try to find one that fits! Hopefully by summer, I will be able to go and and not think about the skirt.

Skirted in Kent yesterday, (Freedom cargo kilt) at Biggin Hill. A couple of car drivers tooted and gave a friendly wave while I was walking the Salt Box Hill road from Biggin Hill over to New Addington, but otherwise no reaction at all on a very full day in which I also travelled on trains, trams, buses, London Underground and a return flight from Newcastle to Stansted.
As a Scot I hate to have to admit this, but wearing a modern style kilt or manskirt out and about is in my experience a lot easier than wearing a traditional Scottish tartan wool kilt.

The kilt looks great. Hope you enjoyed Biggin Hill. I went to Duxford a few weeks ago to look at the new aircraft hanger. It was relly good and well worth a visit.

I've worn macabis every time I am in the UK and never rec'd an agressive or negative reaction. But I wear skirts regularly and so I think I wear them just like any other clothes. I do wear skirts and clothing that present a masculine image in colors of black or grey, but I rarely have had a negative comment.

Welcome DTSA. I have not worn a macabi, but I do wear modern kilts with modern tops and trainers, and I have work a denim skirt out and about. A woman did ask me in the supermarket today about my camouflage cotton kilt, since it was the first time she had seen a non-tartan variety. Usually you get no negative comments - just the occasional giggles and asides from passing teenagers. I think skirt-wearing is becoming just a bit normalized - or maybe it is my attitude that has changed.
