Denim skirts ARE invisible!

Post by binx »

I decided to dare to wear an Old Navy denim mini with sandals, as it got into the 80s today. I couldn't believe it! I went to the mall to get a haircut and was asked if I was Scottish, then explained is was skirt. She was all for men's wearing skirts, but said it was quite unusual to see a guy in one. Got rid of the beard, too. I usually get the snickers and chuckles behind my back when kilted walking through the mall, but got none of that, just a few double-takes from younger women. What a relief...I can confidently go about in skirted comfort this summer!

Just had the opposite....kilt = no reaction....jeans skirt = some reaction. As usual, smiles in women faces..clouds on men faces

I agree. I spent Friday afternoon and evening in a denim skirt, otherwise in clothing that are not male or female (polo shirt!) and ending up in a bar for the evening, no one had a problem and the women were all asking me about the skirt, without saying anything against it, in fact most wanted to know where is was being sold!

I danced with a female friend. She was the one in a pair of jeans

I've been wearing denim skirts (and sarongs) for a few years now and the reaction has been a complete ZERO in all but a handful of instances. In the literally hundreds of times I have been out and about wearing one, I have received precisely two negative comments. I genuinely believe that 90% of people don't notice it's a skirt, and 99% of the remainder either don't care, or are actually impressed/intrigued.

We have reached the stage when men wearing denim skirts and sarongs is acceptable in the vast majority of circumstances and without being on the wrong end of a single, mocking comment or disapproving glance.

Update: Stopped by a Walmart after the mall, and was shortly asked by a clerk if I needed any help. "Nope", and headed for another department. Found I was being followed by clerks! No patrons said a thing. That's it for me...except for getting my tires serviced that I recently purchased. I'll go right out the door and head somewhere else rather than shop there! Then again, maybe I should try on a few skirts on my way out...

Do you believe they suspected you of anything, or were just curious? If the former, then they would have misjudged things; if the latter, they could have just asked. Put that one down to impoliteness or utter misunderstanding.

Now, holding up a skirt to your waist and asking one of them (preferably the meanest-looking one in attendance), "How does this look?" might throw them completely for a loop.

More in detail...

I was in the electronics dept, and attempted to get one of those hanging bubble-pak items, when it fell to the floor, as it was just dangling on the end of the hook. The clerk showed up, then picked it up, put it back on the hook, and it fell again! Either they thought I was going to purposely "flash" someone while picking it up, or maybe stick it under the skirt?? :ninjajig:

Funny thing happened on the way to the forum

Today, I had to go to the local Ace Hardware store to get some clothesline as our clothes dryer is on the blink for a while. I was in a hurry going out so instead of hunting thru my various new twill skirts that I like so much I just grabbed a (converted from shorts) upper knee length denim skirt that was crumpled up on my dresser. Blue T-shirt, sandals and (heaven forbid) socks.

When I walked into the store, one of the regular clerks that had been there for 20 or more years took one look at me and said, Skip, this is the first time in months that I've seen you in denim shorts. Give up on skirts then?

I looked at him, hesistated, and said......ummmm....THIS is a skirt, converted from denim shorts...He took a much longer look and said...I'll be, it just looked like dungaree shorts like you used to wear all the time. I retorted with, it IS a pair of dungaree shorts, I just removed the crotch and sewed the inseams together. MUUUUUCH more comfortable without the crotch slicing up into my privates. You should try it....He said, my wife would kill me. I told him, you've only got one life, might as well be comfortable.

He was mumbling to 2 other clerks as I left...YUP Denim skirts ARE invisible. :)
I had to remove this signature as it was being used on Twitter. This is my OPINION, you NEEDN'T AGREE.

I agree, most people assume denim skirts are denim shorts! Never had a problem, or a question except when wearing less than masculine shoes.

Mary Jane Boy. Three things 1) give me my skirt back...lol 2) how did you put a thumb into your post? 3) Where's the bar as that cold one looks taste. Where I live I wouldn't dare attempt to wear a skirt out in public as I would get shot by some redneck thinking his sexually has been challenged.

The thumb shows up automatically when you upload the photo.

as for the bar - it was a temp bar set up for a 5 day real beer exposition. A lot of punks, hippys and beer drinkers there but no rednecks (this was 2 blocks from the Cambridge, MA city line)!

Denim skirts are invisible. People see what they expect to see, and if they expect to see a man in shorts, that's what they see. It's too bad they don't see what is actually there!
