Buying from Ebay USA when based in the UK

Post by Barleymower »

Ebay fans based here in the UK will have noticed that buying from the site has a "default" region. So when browsing items from the USA (mostly) are mixed in. On closer inspection you are ambushed by huge postage costs that double the purchase cost.

Actual price $61 incl tax and postage
Or this one from Australia

Actual price AU$38

Also factor in the transit time of about 3 weeks.
Loads of money I know but they are among my favourites now and I've only done it twice out of the.. (a lot) I've bought.

But good news, I hope I'm not wrong. From Vinted

This time it's only £2.29 postage (from the USA). It's taking its time getting here and tracking shows it going through a lot of warehouses. So fingers crossed

I don't have the third one yet but here are the other two:

You do have to be careful with the delivery cost. Even on Amazon, if you are not on a prime deal, the delivery cost can be considerably.

I wonder it the may Vinted do their delivery makes a difference to how eBay do it.
Daily, a happy man in a skirt...

How can Vinted cover the cost? £2.29 is very cheap. I thought I would give it a go and see what happens. The skirt is going to an inpost locker, so should be fine..

The skirt arrived today. 12 days after posting from New York. The postage cost was an amazing £2.25, nothing else to pay.

Compared to Ebay who would charge $25 + sales tax.

That's a good result, I just had to pay a £5 surcharge on a bag of 8 items from within the uk as the seller had done a small parcel (up to 2 kg) and this weighted a fair bit more than that.

Was that an amazon, Ebay or vinted purchase?
Also I recently bought a big bag of herbal tea from a UK seller. They did not send it or reply to my messages or answer the phone. Luckily I said via PayPal and they got my money back.

Also the skirt arrived and was not blue as above, it was charcoal grey. I can't be bothered with sending it back to NY.

Buying anything from overseas to the US seems to include a $25 shipping charge at a minimum, not including tariffs. I recently got a skirt from vinted that was UK-originated. The price was too good to pass up.

Maybe I'm a contrarian, but US styles are dreadful. Oh, there are a few US companies I am fine with, but I'm not as enamored with their designs as I am with British/Aussie brands.

It was ebay from a charity shop, however I don't believe it was intentional as the post office should have picked up on it when they went to send it but didn't. In this instance I'm not bothered as the items were a real bargain even with the extra postage so I will just let them know so they don't make the same mistake again.
