Nowdays women mostly wear pants. But it was not always like that. I think we forget to remember that it was a slow process as well.
I truly believe than within the next 5 years it will be common to see men in skirts

Hi to all, in general, and Oldskirt, in particular.
I truly regret seeing your post.
There will always be a tendency to report the positive experiences within the "cafe", and that's fine.
Except that the real world is not like that, there are always bad "moments"
For the "vets", it's not enough to say "I opted to wear a skirt and did"!
For every one of us, that should be a journey that bears describing.
I know that my skirt journey is still continuing but there have been truly dark times when resignation seemed
a better option.
Oldskirt, I wish you well, skirt, not now, future?
Steve.

We should never give up. You have to consider the fact that people who have made a difference in this world are people who never gave up and a NO never stopped them.
Sometimes it is more like, " We lost a battle but have not lost the war!"

I fully agree. Men who strive to be individuals, embrace freedom of choice/expression in various aspects of life should take a leaf out of the book that women hold in their pursuit of their freedom of choice and expression. It works for them, it will so for men if they embrace it. They didn't give up and with regards their choice of clothing they have the full spectrum and without question.

What a difference 5 years makes, but I think the major thing that changed in my life was a change in attitude in the last 2 years.

I dress of 9-5 work every day but when I get home I dress the way I like and that means 90% of the time I'm wearing a skirt or kilt. I have had only one negative comment about my skirt wearing and I told that man I didn't care for or need his opinion, if he didn't like the skit he didn't have to wear on.

I'm a creature of habit, in that I go and do things on a regular basis and the shop people I interact with weekly all don't seem to react to a large man in a skit.

As i find trousers extremely uncomfortable for long periods of driving, I have generally worn skirts for this activity. For the last six years or so, I wear skirts or dresses everywhere except while at work, where the trouser is required.

Very few people seem to care and all comments by the younger generations have been very positive.

Keep on skirting.

When driving these long distances if your on the interstate and need to use the restroom, stop for something eat or gas or check into a motel in the evening to you go ahead and to what you need to do without any thought about it?

I wear utility kilt almost everywhere and never give it a second thought.

I'm sure you'll find that your own fears are much greater than any negative reactions you get. And don't forget, those negative critics might not have liked your shirt or shorts or jeans either.

As a black man, I thought I'd catch all kinds of hell for wearing a skirt in public when I began the practice back in 2008. However, that concern never came to pass as I've been out and about in skirts of all lengths, styles and colors, and, the most part, no one gives me so much as the time of day, heck, I even get a compliment on my appearance every now and then. I've found that the important thing is to dress appropriately for whatever surroundings you happen to be in, and to act like what you're wearing is no big deal, because, when you stop to think about, it truly isn't. It's just a piece of clothing, nothing more, nothing less.

I have been on this forum since Nov 2011 and in my first post, I noted that I have first worn a skirt on 2009. It was a denim mini-skirt - still one of my favourite styles - which then had a very short outing at a petrol (ie gas) station whilst I was driving the car. Humble beginnings but since then, I have worn various styles whilst travelling by bus, train, bike :!: and plane and going to doctors, dentist, shopping, meeting other skirted men and also among friends and colleagues at work and other curling mates.

That original skirt sadly is no longer in existence as it was slashed to pieces with scissors by MOH - which caused some real problems for a time. Since than I have had to keep my skirt-wearing to solo trips :( and we don't discuss it at all to prevent a repetition with my (fairly few) skirts.

I (being from Scotland) frequently see men wearing tartan kilts - not always just for a special event - and have begun noticing others wearing similar UK's (black, beige, dark green, blue denim) and a few others in actual skirts. Theye are still very few and far between but there does seem to be slightly more commonplace than 5 years ago.

To SkirtedMan, I think it can only be a good thing that there are fewer forum queries like, "I am a man. can I wear a skirt?" as when you consider how many queries there are along the line of, "I am a woman. Can I wear trousers?" I have looked on occasions for articles on skirted men and the Press seem to be more accepting though the "war press" as I call them, still try to sensationalise any sighting. It seems to be more accepted that men wearing skirt is a real option. Just not too many have taken the plunge yet but we will all persevere.

It was said some time ago on this forum, that if all men started wearing skirts, the raison d'être for this forum would be superseded and it will then cease to exist! Which would mean that we have succeeded. 8) :D

The first, ( and so far only ) time I drove long distance, I was a bit nervous at the first gas stop. There were no problems. I did find out one interesting fact though, even if you have the most drab, shorts like skirt, no guy is going to miss the fact that you're wearing one when you step up the urinal and lift the front. I found this out because the gas station washroom had the most peculiar mirror placement ever. I could see the guys reaction as the mirror ran all the way down the wall alongside, weird. I now realise that when you lift the front, the skirt gathers around the back of the legs and really highlights the fact that it is a skirt. His double take nearly wrenched his neck off! He then shrugged and went out the door. No problem!

Absolutely. Just put on your skirt for the day and do whatever you'd do in trousers or shorts, just the same way.

if at all possible, though, try to appear confident and friendly, not shaky and recluse. No matter what you wear, people don't go for shaky and recluse.

Lines of urinals in public restrooms are a bit freaky the first few times. Other men want to see how you're going to do it in that thing. So show them and mark it up as a victory.

I've never driven more than say, twenty miles while wearing a skirt, so that's not a concern. However, I have had nature call while at a multiplex a time or two, so, I simply went to the men's room to take care of business, easy as pie.

For me, 5 years has made a world of difference! Discovered the Skirt Cafe about 3.5 years ago, went skirted in public for the first time 3 years & 3 months ago, and never looked back. Wearing skirts almost all the time in warm weather has made me a happier person, without a doubt. I just wish I had started earlier.

For society at large, things have gotten much better (witness the rise of gay marriage and transgender awareness). Men are buying more kilts and skirts, and wearing them more... but unfortunately we have a LONG way to go to make skirt-wearing "mainstream". So get out there on the street and add to the numbers... today Main Street, tomorrow Mainstream!
When I heard about skirting, I jumped in with both feet!
