Fashion Reverie - men in skirts
Here is an article from a few days ago which I have just come across:-
It is positive and seems to show the change in attitudes from derision to more acceptance and as the one person to comment says, all we need to do is get them into the shops!

Great article, not too sure about some of the skirts in the pics though.

Hi ST,
Very good article and yes, the day will come when we see a male skirt in Markies or BHS.
The pictures are really a showcase for a complete look not just the skirts. I'd wear some of them but the line would be drawn at footwear or tops. I'd leave those for the really adventurous youngsters amongst us.
Steve.

I for one would like to see more conservative skirts, skirt suit, and dress designs that a typical business man could wear. Most of the presentations look so far out in left field.

Hello... I haven't posted in a long time..... but get a chance to follow along on occasion... I agree with a couple of post above, that if they would design and MAKE some decent skirts and business dress outfits, it would go a LONG WAY to making us guys wearing skirts accepted.... ! Since I live in a very conservative area of the northwest, I hardly dare go out in my kilts.... If decent designs were put on the racks, probably in the more liberal areas of the country they would sell quite well.. Thanks guys for all the post...Keep up the good work and thoughts.

I always thought the northwest was pretty liberal and easy-going.kiltedBob wrote:...Since I live in a very conservative area of the northwest, I hardly dare go out in my kilts...
I bet your own trepidation is a hundred times stronger than any negative reactions you'd get.

An interesting article, but I paid little attention to the stuff those models were wearing. Why bother when I can go to my friendly neighborhood department store (for me, that's Sears or JCPenney) and find all the nice skirts I want? I feel that the public mindset about men in skirts is coming around to being seen in a positive light, but that change is slow in coming, yet, I feel that change is taking place.
I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman.

Re: Fashion Reverie - men in skirts
I see far more women starting to wear dresses and skirts. For a time almost no person wore those articles. So it would be natural for your (JeffB1959) observation to be true.JeffB1959 wrote:I feel that the public mindset about men in skirts is coming around to being seen in a positive light, but that change is slow in coming, yet, I feel that change is taking place.

Interestingly, I have less of a negative response to kilts and skirts in the conservative parts of the NW, but, in the liberal areas, I've sometimes felt a little uneasy at times (at least back in my formative years - not now, I don't really care anymore).kiltedBob wrote:Hello... Re: Fashion Reverie - men in skirts
I live on the east side of the Cascade mountains and it is rather conservative.... I stopped in my take and bake PizzA store and ran into an elderly woman (putting it nicely) and she made a few caustic remarks about my gender and family heritage.... Rather than starting a shouting match, I picked up my purchase and left... You don't win by arguing! Another time I came out of a restaurant and was immediately accosted by two women in their early 40's and they looked me over and started talking how I reminded them of their grandfather who ALWAYS wore his kilt(s).... They were just the opposite of the old biddy in the pizza joint... As we were talking an older woman drove by in her car, looked long and hard at me, pulled into a parking spot and proceeded to march right up to my face... fearing the worst I was preparing myself.... She said: At least one man in town has BALLS!!!!!! Then she proceeded to check me out and commented "good for you" and proceeded to look me over closely, said my sporran we very nice, then marched off, got into her car and drove off...! You never know what to expect... I would guess that on the West side of the Mountains, I could wear most anything.... Particularly in Portland area.... Kilted Bob

This sort of reaction needs to be anticipated and understood. After all, we are poking a stick in society's eye with our sartorial choices, and some folks can't get beyond that. I'd have thanked her for the observation and let that be that; that always throws them off the scent. I'd roll with that -- quite high praise, actually, given the effort exerted on the part of the observer. As we were talking an older woman drove by in her car, looked long and hard at me, pulled into a parking spot and proceeded to march right up to my face... fearing the worst I was preparing myself.... It may be selective memory, but I have no recollection of any overtly negative commentary that I haven't been able to overcome quite trivially. This may vary with locale, of course, but sometimes the stereotypes that are given of rural areas are sometimes surprisingly wrong in this regard

Thank you for your response... The Elderly "lady" just didn't want to hear from me... and I didn't honestly want to get into any fray... so I let her go on, I made my purchase and went on... I figure she had the problem, not me... The others events all went quite well, but the one who stopped and made her comment was really quite friendly and encouraging... She was just one of the conservative ranch type folks...short and to the point... but she was NOT hostile... just wanted to "clear that up".. Kilted Bob

It seems you coped with this pretty well. The thing is to remember that it's her problem, not yours.kiltedBob wrote:?..I stopped in my take and bake PizzA store and ran into an elderly woman (putting it nicely) and she made a few caustic remarks about my gender and family heritage...

It surprised me to read 100% positive comments below the article. What do you think?

Thanks for all the comments (all positive)...Though none of us are Christopher Columbus, we are "sailing" towards the edge of the social world, but we will like Columbus did, find that the social world also has no over the edge drop off and therefore, we just keep on skirting and exploring the new frontier(s).
