Spreading non-bifurcation

Post by couyalair »

I see that Styria in southern Austria has not only some fine tartans and kilts as well as some rather monstrous sporrans, they are now proposing debifurcated Lederhosen!
Can't see it catching on somehow.

So, the de-bifurcated 'Lederhosen' will be 'Lederroecke'.......Leatherskirts! Now, their traditional knee-slapping dance, usually performed in leather shorts would acquire an added interest!

I do't know why I wrote "Styria". The home of the Rettl clothing business is in Carinthia (Kaernten).
It will be interesting to see what comments come up on Facebook regarding the photos. There are, of course, a number of skirtwearers in Germany, but the negative comments I have seen in German magazines regarding men's skirts in fashion shows, makes me think they are less liberated than I had imagined in that part of the world.

Yes, Martin, Germans may be less liberated – when it comes to men in skirts.

Last year I spent three days in Düsseldorf and Cologne in connection with the Photokina Exhibition. The two first days I was wearing traditional kilts and I really received an overwhelming lot of compliments.
The last day I was wearing my sand Utilikilt Original, and I got quite a few negative remarks.

And of course, WE know (or we say) that a Utilikilt is a KILT, designed for men. But to 99.9% of the population, who have never seen or heard about Utilikilts or modern kilts or men’s skirts it is just a SKIRT, like it or not.

I think that the operant part of Martin's quote there revolves around "...men's skirts..." and "...fashion shows...". Most of the men's skirts I've seen in Fashion (capital "F" there) imagery look implausible; they either look like they're barely stifling a scream of, "I'm a man dammit, why are you looking at me?" or don't properly favour the male physique (and, like the gals, men come in many shapes). In short, most of them seem to get it wrong.

In this regard, I have some hope for the likes of Marc Jacobs --- who wears skirts -- because they are practitioners in skirtsmanship. As far as the designer who sends outlandish stuff down the runway and never dons a skirt of his own goes, those are merely attention-seeking charlatans. The only way that we'll get good design is by designers who wear skirts themselves.

Ultimately, it's down to us -- those who wear skirts -- to be our own ambassadors. Nobody is going to do it for us, and if all we do is sit around and cry in our beer that "we can't wear skirts because nobody else does" then we're in for a long cold winter of drunkenness. In short, if you wear skirts around the house, step outside. If you're wearing skirts around your back yard, take it to the next level and hit the street. Go to the local pub; go shopping; run the errands -- do whatever it is that is part of your daily routine, and just substitute the skirt for your jeans or Dockers.

Exactly what I think, and especially: "Just substitute the skirt for your jeans or Dockers"

Crfriendly, here here, I agree, its about being seen and making skirts look normal. I try my best to just blend so that it almost looks like I am in shorts and then when people see me normally going about my buisness they are more inclined to think the whole skirt look is normal.

Much here depends on what your overall style is. Certainly in the realm of casual, the tendency is to try to blend in with the herd and not attract attention, and this is likely the place where we'll see things going with skirted looks for guys, at least early on. However, and this is just my personal take on it, I despise what modern "casual" has become; I feel it has gone way beyond casual and well into the realm of slovenly. Hence, I tend towards a more formal sort of look, and that makes me stick out -- moreso if I'm wearing a skirt. I just deal with that and it no longer bothers me. As far as casual/slovenly goes, I did that look for many years and I have no desire to go back to it.

More than anything else, I find that if one doesn't behave strangely -- like one is doing something wrong -- when one is wearing a skirt it goes over with onlookers quite well. Yes, it can take courage -- especially in the beginning -- and it takes some psychological stamina, but it can be done and the look can be attractive and compelling. When I feel like I can't deal with that I put on trousers and just try to fade into the woodwork.

Thanks Guys
But not my first triumph . We met a dutch gay couple a few years back one of whom was very taken with my cotton print Kilts .We ended up having an hour long tutorial on a table by the pool on how to make a kilt . We bumped into them again at the same resort in Grand Caneria this spring , He was wearing a kilt made from a cotton fabric printed like it was the front page of a broadsheet newspaper. annoyingly I fear his sewing skills eclipsed even mine, it did look superb .He said he had made three or four others . So it would seem there are more enlightend guys out there whether they chat on the net or not.
