Good grief, that looks terrible. It's as if he has wrapped a table cloth round his waist.
Can't mens' skirt designers come up with anything better than that?

Terrible does not even begin to describe how that looks and wearing jeans under the skirt just makes it worse.

I agree! That is an awful look! I have never understood why anyone would wear pants under a skirt in the first place. I want to wear a skirt instead of pants. I want the freedom and flowing feel under my skirt, not more cloth and especially not ugly blue jeans.

I'd guess it happened sometime during the very late 1980s or 1990s. The beginning of the 1980s seemed to be dominated by the "Wall Street" (the movie) look as a repudiation of the perceived excesses of experimentation of the 1970s. During the late '80s and very early '90s, the look shifted to the "Dockers" look (which is just one short step from dungarees), and finally with the advent of "business casual", denim became "acceptable" in the workplace (so long as it was "neat and clean" (which is open to interpretation)), and it's been all downhill ever since.

I'm not the kind to wear it, personally. And it looks like many here are in agreement.

Yet, this "fashion" has roots in recent fashion trends from what I've seen. I've noticed many young women wearing similar garb. Especially during the spring it seems, they wear tight jeans with a skirt over it as a fashion statement. I've seen everything from micromini skirts over jeans to full a-line below the knee skirts. They're in all kinds of colors and styles, however stripes/checkered/tartan/etc seem to be "fashionable". This "development" seems to be very recent, maybe the past 5-10 years, certainly a post 90's thing of skirts over jeans?

It seems they're trying this skirt-over-jeans-market with this $50 hip garment.

If I want to look like that, I'll just wear a sweatshirt tied around my waist!

I'm with KM. When I saw that all I could think positively of was being "in style" by wrapping
and tying the long sleeves of a checkered shirt around my waist and leaving the unbuttoned
except for the top button "front" open to show that I was a "real man" wearing denims
under it.

What's wrong with the designers/manufacturers? All they have to do is produce some simple, plain denim/canvas/cotton skirts in solid or dark colours, and bin the jeans/trousers underneath, and these are the styles which are likely to succeed. Messing around with weird table cloth arrangements over the top of a pair of jeans isn't going to interest anyone.
