I know this might be old news for some, but the large outdoors retailer REI is still selling their Mountain Hardwear Kilt:

This is one of the few large retailers that are selling a MUG at a reasonable cost (as far as I've seen).

That's the new Elkommando, which replaces the original Mountain Kilt. Well done to Mountain Hardwear and their retailers for sticking with the concept of a men's hiking skirt, it shows there's definitely a market out there.

Just ordered one directly from the mountaingear.com site. Will post a review when I receive it. Site says it won't ship until 3/15. Appears to be a new version of the kilt, this time with pleats.

I wonder if they carry them in my local store? And to think I've just been backpacking in my Lands' End twill skirt (shortened a bit).

Not sure it matters, they are not charging me shipping or sales tax -- the only thing I am concerned about is fit. Can't beat trying it on in a local store...

I have 3 of the Mountain Hardwear hiking kilts and they are probably my most favorite garment of all.

Definitely have to check this out! I checked at one of the local REI stores when I first heard about the Mountain Kilt and the associate had no idea what I was talking about. Thanks for posting this!

I'd be very tempted to get one myself, except that it's only available in the USA as far as I can tell, and the suppliers all charge horrendous prices (like 50 dollars) for postage to Europe. If I ever visit America, it will be on the top of my shopping list.

Well spotted RichardA,
I think I am going to order a black 44" one of those, they look smart and I like the price.
Will keep you informed.

I contacted Bradshaw Taylor last year about the Mountain Hardware kilt. They told me that they had brought two samples into the UK some time ago and still had them. No sales to date. I was offered the chance to buy one of the samples (at a discount price) but sadly they were too small for me.

They did offer to try to get hold of a kilt from the States with their next order, in which case I would only have had to pay shipping within the UK, but the kilt had been discontinued and they were unable to find one in my size. However, I suspect that they would be able to get the El Kommando kilt since that is current production.

Have fun,

Ian.

Do you know which sizes they had - maybe one of us could fit into one...

Sorry about the slow reply, I've been offline for a couple of days.

The answer I received from Bradshaw Taylor is below (email was dated 23 July '09):

Dear Ian,

As you can imagine the Mountain Kilt does not sell in large numbers, let's just say that it took us three years to sell the sample; we do however have a sample in a large so if you could fit this size I could do you a damn good deal on it. Let me know your thoughts.

Kind regards

Obviously, if you want to email Gillian directly you will need to replace the [at] with @.

IIRC the large size was about 36 inch waist but if you're interested check the size guide on Mountain Hardware's website.

Hope that helps someone,

Ian.

I guess those comments mean they are closing the line out completely. :blue:
