Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
Last Friday I travelled from Horsham up to Peterborough, via London by train, to pick a Land Rover I'd brought. I decided to wear a utility kilt type kilt. No one with whom I can into contact with on the day, made any comments about it or seemed to express any surprise, and I never noticed an "passers by" looking either.

Walking down a side street in Wells this morning. A guy ran out of a cafe and asked about the kilt (olive green Union kilt). Had to explain that it is a utility kilt and told him the web address: kilts.org . He said he'd google for it, so perhaps we'll see another man in Wells in a skirt or kilt. He thought it might start a trend

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
After a week on a narrowboat wearing jeans, which were slowly disintegrating, it was great to change into my favourite denim skirt for the journey home. After some3 comments one of my mates made about my previous kilted exploits I decided not to skirt during the trip. They are good friends and I don't want to alienate one who has very conventional standards, it may be humour but I don't want to take the chance.
I am the God of Hellfire! and I bring you truffles!

I don not know B&B's friends obviously, but I would not have thought that friends would be upset so easily.Big and Bashful wrote: They are good friends and I don't want to alienate one who has very conventional standards ...
Recently I have been going out with a lady friend who sometimes astonishes me with her conservative thinking about society, politics, religion -- everything, including disparaging remarks about gay men -- and we often argue ! But she is good company and puts up with my sometimes hesitant Spanish.
My kilts and skirts are mentioned from time to time, but never has she suggested I wear more conventional clothes or refused to be seen with me in public.
But everyone is different.

She must have realised that she has to take the whole package or nothing at all. Clearly your sparkling company outweighs any demerits she might award you for your dress sense!

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
Well....I've been "oot and aboot" the last few months in kilts. Seems to be fairly well accepted at church - even to some of the older ladies coming forward and saying they like it, and two or three who call it a skirt but seem okay with it. I sometimes escort a friend's mom to her physical therapy and other errands so I have a witness, where on an average outing about 4.5 ladies will make some kind of comment about the kilt - they like it, their husband or son wants to know where to get one, they start up a conversation about Scotland or Ireland, etc. Curiosity, interest on the part of the ladies. Guys don't seem to care, a few will look or even fewer will do a double-take and so far even fewer will look upset or whatever.
I do have some black knee-length skirts, pencil skirt, miniskirt, straight-skirt and wear one occasionally with a smile now and then from the ladies rather than the active interest the kilt engenders, but that is about the only difference.
The office has seen me kilted a couple times, but I wear the standard business attire on scheduled work days or if I have sufficient notice to change before going in.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I finally had a comment on a skirt while hiking up the Lost Mine trail in Big Bend Natl Park. A fellow said I had "interesting attire for hiking" and that it looked comfortable. I was wearing a beige stretch outdoor skirt by Merrell, one I like for its stretch and four zippered pockets. I said basically "it's light, cool, and stretches." Of many hikers on the trail, only he commented, though some college age girls looked at the skirt and seemed ready to speak but passed by with just a "hi". Otherwise I encountered only one rattlesnake and we bid each other adieu from a safe distance.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
Got on the light rail to go home tonight, 2 guys and a girl slipped on in front of me. A couple and a friend it looked like, late teens, early twenties, not a particularly impressive group, would have avoided them if it were later and they had had more to drink, you can picture them I'm sure. I got my bike on, and propped it against the other door and stood behind it to hold it against the jerky acceleration. As they couple reshuffled themselves, the guy when he got himself straight, took a look at me. "Are you wearing a skirt?" he muttered. I only just heard him over the air conditioning on the train. I looked up at him, and said "Yes" his eyebrows rose, "It's cool" I said. His eyebrows stayed up while looking at my skirt, then he gave me a thumbs up and went back to talking to his GF.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
This evening, my wife and I were having our own little cookout in our back yard when our neighbors, who were also doing a cookout with guests invited us to move over with them, so we did. Several of our neighbors' guests were coworkers of mine that I manage. We shared items from our meals. I had on a khaki, above the knee skirt and a silk shirt with buttons on the left. No one gave any indication of noticing anything unusual. Just another testimony that if you act normal, so will others, so don't worry.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I found this amusing. I came home from work where I was wearing a black wool blend kilt and decided to mow the grass. I didn't want grass clippings sticking to the kilt so I changed into work clothes...a denim skirt. It's the same length as my kilts and I don't think any of the neighbors noticed the difference.
I would wear the denim to work or just out and about but the wife frowns on it. Kilts are okay but not skirts no matter how similar.

I've quite often changed into a denim skirt to now the grass, usually it's the flared one for ease of movement. Makes perfect sense, unlike your wife's attitude to your skirts!
