Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
I'm quite happy wearing opaque tights, if they fit. By that, I mean they have to be snug enough to not ride down, or constrict too much. I've found a couple that are... acceptable...just, but for the most part not been very successful. I have not tried the ones specifically for men, if I get the opportunity to add such to an order for not much, I'll give it a try. I do find tights feel a bit weird even if not riding down, and prefer to have separate legs and briefs. In the mean time, I've found a source of thigh highs that work extremely well, and I've come up with a trick for fancy design tights that I like. I get the large size, cut off the the legs just below the brief part, double over the top and stitch it with a zig zag while holding it stretched on the machine. The hem is not the neatest, but as it is clipped into the garter out of sight, <shrug> I have an idea to improve on that, and will be working on it over the next couple of days. May post some pictures if I can figure out how to take them, along with some modelling of the result. I find that a knee length skirt and the right density of hosiery is a good combination in the weather so far, but I have found that the heavier cotton blend tights/stockings are a bit too warm indoors at work. I bought a pair of snowboarding socks yesterday, specifically for the colours. Check it out! http://images.evo.com/imgp/700/91508/41 ... -black.jpg Don't think they I can wear them much at work, too warm! Pity. Still looking to find or make a soft shell kilt or wrap skirt, soft shell blocks the wind almost totally while not being too thick, heavy, or hot. Should be near perfect for the result I seek.
Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
Knee socks! It would have to be really cold for me to wear tights. I wear wool skirts/kilts when it is cold and sometimes below the knee when it is colder . That is enough to keep me warm when it is very cold.

Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
After trying all sorts of legwear options over the years, I have settled on a limited selection for with my skirts. (1) Knee-length socks, for with below-the-knee skirts, or for when I'm active and can't risk shredding tights. (2) Sheer tights (pantyhose for the yanks here) in nude colour, the cheap supermarket variety, for skirts knee-length or longer. (3) Heavy wool tights, with shorter skirts, nice in winter. And finally, (4) bare legs, often the best option if the skirt is long enough and the weather reasonable.

Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
It's tights every time. I do have leggings and stay ups but it is for me the feel of tights. As a construction worker I eventually bought some tights with persuasion from co-workers. Normally I would pack long-johns into my luggage ( I work away from home ) but the cold came early. For 20+yrs every winter I have worn tights. It was only earlier this year I thought about and took the plunge of buying a skirt. ( Horny hormones made me do it ). Around home I wear nothing but skirts and have been to the local supermarket ( Tesco Superstore ) about half a dozen times in a few different skirts and tights. Why aren't males brought up (raised) wearing skirts, the freedom, feel, comfort and.... It does feel like a wasted life coming to skirts so late in life (55) but at least my horny hormones did something so absolutely wonderful in introducing me to the skirt. SECRET SKIRT WEARERS, be bold, go out in your skirts and eventually it will become the norm allowing people like us to find the blessings of skirt wearing at a younger age.

Hi Jo77 - a welcome to you from the right hand side of the pond!
Good to hear that you are venturing out skirted - I too started late in life and only purchased a kilt (a skirt in all but name) when I was a little over 50 (and that for a Scotsman is a bit unusual). Skirts for me started at about the same age as you (55-ish) and I too wonder why I didn't go for it earlier.
Truth be told, I did try on my younger sister's skirts when in my teens but only when alone at home. Never would have thought of doing such a thing outside nor was the psyche geared up to even think about it, as it is so ingrained from birth - the "men can only wear trousers, women can only wear the skirts" mentality. Now at last it is changing first for the women who can wear what they like and much more gradually and recently, men can now do just the same. I would know we are seriously winning when man-skirts start appearing in High St stores.
Where are you from? How about a bit of background in the Introductions section?
Hope to hear more from you in the future - you will fit it here fine!

Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
I wore some black leggings under my black and white polka dot calf length skirt yesterday while out Christmas shopping with the girls. It was in the 30's and somewhat blustery.
Everything from the waist up was slightly uncomfortable... (may have to break out the heavier wear, the hoodie isn't quite cutting it this time of year)
However, everything from the waist down was much better, almost to the point of being toasty. Only trouble with leggings is I have to be so selective about which skirt I wear, not just any skirt works, some can be quite uncooperative with the static cling and all. The rayon skirt I wore seemed to help somewhat, but the cotton ones, especially the large flared skirts from Misty Mountain can be quite cumbersome with the static cling.
I've also noticed something curious since I started shaving my legs.... even when wearing trousers at work, I can feel the coldness of the pant leg against bare skin. I never really realized how that small amount of leg hair was insulating me from the inside of cold pant legs. Not that I want to grow my hair back out... no I rather like the feeling of smooth legs any other time.... but to say the least I will probably wear my long johns more often while at work while it's cold out.
Knee socks? Never could stand them. As far as socks go.... nothing above the calf. And here lately I've been wearing exclusively black ankle socks, because I think they look better with skirts.
Pantyhose? I have two pair, and wear them for aesthetic purposes for the most part. They are so thin I don't see where they offer much insulating effect. The leggings work much better... for me anyway. I would like to get some in different colors... department stores only seem to have black and regular "skin" color. I'd really like a dark green pair, along with a purple one.

Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
It would have to be tights for me, I've tried stockings, unless they are the ones with the elastic grippy material that can help them stay up, they slowly make their way down my thighs, requiring either a discreet hitch up of my pencil skirt and adjustment, or a trip to the loo to sort them out
With a kilt, kilt socks generally stay put, other types of skirt, especially pencil cuts that I prefer can make thigh high hose work their way down (unless I wear suspenders but that's time consuming
). The thigh high socks are a little bit too school girlish for me, and when the call of nature needs to be answered, underwear that isn't time consuming is best

Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
I only wear socks with kilts. otherwise it's sheer tights 90% of the time (nice ones too like Wolford, Falke, err John Lewis) and opaque tights for 9%. The 1% when I am bare legged is after exercise when it's too hot for hosiery. I understand the attraction for going bare legged - it's a lovely feeling - but I also love the feeling of sheer tights !

The thing to remember if the socks; sox; thigh highs etc. don't have much in the firm elastics it is London bridges falling down.kilty wrote:It would have to be tights for me, I've tried stockings, unless they are the ones with the elastic grippy material that can help them stay up, they slowly make their way down my thighs, requiring either a discreet hitch up of my pencil skirt and adjustment, or a trip to the loo to sort them out![]()

This is even more so a problem with shaven legs with nothing to grip on in the falling (failing) act.
So remember the kilt sox with the FLASHES and the elastic band circling the upper calf for assistance in this area.
One does not have to wear the Flashes with the elastic just use the elastic band and fold over the top of the sock.
The upper leg (thigh) is a problem because - unless fastened real high up the leg the leg gradually tapers off down to the knee
resulting in less and less for sock and elastic band to get a grip on.
With Kilt Flashes the band is well high up the leg (calf) with little or no chance for the falling out.
Yet wearing a too tight elastic band is apt to be almost tourniquet like and not useful of practical.
Kilts are normally worn sans leg wear except for kilt sox and flashes.
Seasonally with sub temps tights leggings and the damn P@nts are worn to prevent frostbite and other extremes.
Dumb traditions are going nowhere to thaw out windchill driven frostbite - and don't joke about the tongue on metal pipes - "I dare ya" !
What is really neat is the wearing of contrasting leg wear with skirts and kilts. Think of the court jester !
Since you are wearing a kilt and the center of party attention may as well as grab the full lime light !
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!

WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

I like to wear contrasting knee socks with my mid calf length skirts. Yesterday I wore ivory socks with a lot of texture with my dark blue/green "kilt" skirt.r.m.anderson wrote:What is really neat is the wearing of contrasting leg wear with skirts and kilts.

On Xmas day I will be traditionally kilted (Royal blue kilt with black and fine red stripes) and with beige knee-high hose such as the pic below. (I had published part of this before but I have lightened it a bit to show the colours better)skirted_in_SF wrote:I like to wear contrasting knee socks with my mid calf length skirts. Re: Tights, pantyhose, knee scocks
Well, for me, it depends on the forecast and the temperatures. I usually wear tights (the U.S. version, heh) with skirts and they keep me perfectly warm on cold days, I've also worn leggings with denim skirts as short as 15 inches and they not only look stylish but keep me warm as well. As for pantyhose, I save that for dressier outfits and warmer weather, say like in spring and summer. My color of choice when it comes to tights is black, but I've also worn brown and gray as I prefer more muted colors for fall and winter.
I don't want to LOOK like a woman, I just want to DRESS like a woman.

There is nothing I like less than knee socks, except maybe chewing on aluminum foil. It's either bare legs or tights for me, and with December weather here around a miserably humid 80F, it looks like bare legs and short hems for a while. We are a good 25 degrees above normal.

It hit 81 today. The beach was nice for the quick walk we took as a family. I wore a purple print nylon stretch skirt by Woolrich. Grey tee shirt, a freebie from a seed company. Blue Chaco sandals. Unbelievable here for December 25th.
