Re: Above the knee or below the knee!
Warm summers? Where do you go for them?
The lovely Scottish weather means that mine range from 18" to 39"! Right now, anything less than 36" is too draughty.

Re: Above the knee or below the knee!
Get your skirted posterior to Australia, I can garantee you will want short skirts. It's 20c in Hobart today but at the other extreme if you go to Darwin it will be about 36c! And its not the hottest part of the year yet. Had a holiday in the centre of Aus in early spring this year and we had a couple of days of 30c though the nights could still be around zero. So what ever you want to wear we can cater for it as long as you don't mind moving around a few thousand kmskirtyscot wrote:Warm summers? Where do you go for them?

Definately above the knee for me, but not strictly mini either. I like about 18 inches length for my skirts.

Re: Above the knee or below the knee!
ahh... the reason I wear skirts instead of kilts (aside from the cost issue)...
I like the length, never been one for short clothes bifurcated or not...
I'm planning on trying to get a tailor to make a "long" calf or ankle length kilt...

Please try to post a picture if you succeed in this endeavour. I;m rather partial to the thought of a modern take on the mediaeval "great kilt" which seems more practical in the cooler weather than kilt and k.hose.Man in a skirt wrote:I'm planning on trying to get a tailor to make a "long" calf or ankle length kilt...

The skirt part of a great kilt is no longer than a regular kilt; all the extra cloth gets wound round the upper body, or over the shoulder and down the back. A bit of fun, not really very practical -- and you'll still need woolen hose if it's cold!
A long "ladies' kilt skirt" is far more useful on chilly winter evenings.

Is the best place if you are in Europe.
Or : http://www.heritageofscotland.com/Kilts ... roduct.php
-- a bit cheaper.
I' sure there must be many other sources.

Interesting... I've been thinkin about finding a good tailor and handing them a kilt pattern, and tellin them to: use denim and make it long...

I remember bookmarking a website which featured full length kilts. I will look it out, but not just now, there is food on hot things, mustn't ignore the kitchen or smoke will happen!

Several yards of worsted wool is one thing. The same amount of denim would weight a ton, I think, and it would neither swish and swing nor keep its shape.Man in a skirt wrote:Interesting... Oh well, it was 21st century kilts, but they don't show any on their website anymore.Big and Bashful wrote:I remember bookmarking a website which featured full length kilts. I will look it out, but not just now, there is food on hot things, mustn't ignore the kitchen or smoke will happen!

I believe the take-up of them was minute. They will still make you one though. Budget £800 or so...

Re: Above the knee or below the knee!
Another thing to recall is that kilts are specifically designed for their length, and once that length gets much outside the design limits the aprons will become a real problem. So, one cannot just pick a pattern and then say, "Make it 3/4s again as long" without courting disaster.couyalair wrote:Several yards of worsted wool is one thing. If one looks at long "kilted skirts", one will find that they're usually pleated all the way 'round so as to get around the "apron problem". From experience, and I have a floor-length pleated skirt, pleats all 'round offer enough scope in the hem as to not be restricting; I haven't measured the hem circumference of mine, but I'll bet it's in excess of ten feet which yields plenty of room for a long stride. I suspect that a floor-length job with kilt-like aprons would be almost impossible to walk in.

Re: Above the knee or below the knee!
I have them in all lengths from Mini to Maxi.
Depending on the time of year my preferred length changes, summer 15-18" winter 18-36"
18"-Knee, 36" - Ankle.
